Gerhana ini merupakan yang terlama di Asia seabad terakhir
Warga Asia kini menikmati gerhana yang merupakan yang terlama dalam sejarah abad ini, dengan wilayah seluas India dan Cina gelap gulita.
Para penikmat gerhana amatir dan ilmuwan melakukan perjlanan jauh utnuk menyaksikan gerhana ini, yang berlangsung sekitar lima menit.
Gerhana pertama kali bisa disaksikan dini hari Rabu di timur India, meski di sejumlah wilayah dihiasi awan tebal.
Gerhana telah bergerak di sepanjang India, Nepal, Burma, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cina dan ke arah Pasifik.
Gerhana pertama menjadi gerhana total di India pukul 00.53 GMT. Kemudian bergerak ke arah kepulauan selatan Jepang dan akan menghilang dari pandangan di darat di Pulau Nikumaroro di negara selatan Pasifik Kiribati. Gerhana berakhir pukul 04.18 GMT.
Dilain tempat, gerhana parsial terlihat diseluruh Asia.
Disikapi beda
Di India, jutaan orang berkumpul di tempat-tempat terbuka dari pantai Barat hingga pegunungan di utara, dimana awan menyingkir di sejumlah kota pada fajar tadi - tepat sebelum gerhana total.
"Kami tidak terlalu yakin karena cuaca mendung ini tapi ini tetap merupakan kesempatan unik dimana pagi tiba-tiba berubah jadi malam hanya dalam hitungan lebih dari tiga menit," ilmuwan Amitabh Pande mengatakan pada kantor berita Associated Press.
Gerhana ini sangat diminati di Asia terutama di India dan Cina
Di India dan Nepal, dimana menyaksikan gerhana sambil berendam dalam air suci dipandang bertuah, orang-orang berkumpul di sungai atau kolam, termasuk puluhan ribu orang di Varanasi anak sungai Gangga.
"Kami datang kesini karena para leluhur mengatakan ini saat terbaik untuk kehidupan setelah mati nanti," kata Bhailal Sharma, seorang warga desa yang menempuh perjlanan ke Varanasi dari India Tengah.
Namun bagi sebagian kepercayaan lain, gerhana dipandang sebagai firasat buruk.
Sejumlah orangtua di New Delhi menahan anak mereka pergi sekolah karena satu ajaran Hindu mengatakan tabu menyiapkan makanan saat gerhana, sementara perempuan hamil disarankan untuk tinggal didalam rumah karena ada kepercayaan menyebut gerhana bisa membahayakan janin.
"Ibu dan bibi saya mengatakan agar tinggal di rumah di ruangan yang gelap dengan tirai tertutup, berbaring dan membaca doa," kata Krati Jain, seorang pekerja piranti lunak di New Delhi yang sedang hamil anak pertama.
Sementara pejabat di Cina, dimana gerhana dipandang sebagai pertanda buruk dalam kepercayaan lama disana, meyakinkan publik bahwa layanan untuk umum tetap berjalan normal.
Di selatan negara itu, awan tebal dan hujan diperkirakan akan membuat upaya menyaksikan gerhana menjadi mustahil, sementara polusi di kota-kota besar juga menjadi halangan tersendiri.

Wabah H1N1 Flu Babi Tak dapat dihentikan

Flu babi telah menyebar di lebih dari 100 negara
Pejabat senior PBB bidang kesehatan mengatakan penyebaran penyakit flu babi di seluruh dunia saat ini tidak bisa dihentikan.
Hal ini disampaikan direktur jenderal Organisasi Kesehatan Dunia (WHO) Margareth Chan ketika membuka forum tentang cara-cara menangani flu babi di Meksiko.
Chan menambahkan menggelar pertemuan ini di Cancun menunjukkan kepercayaan diri Meksiko dalam mengatasi penyakit ini.
Meksiko adalah negara dengan kasus flu babi terbanyak di dunia.
WHO mengatakan sebagian besar kasus H1N1 tergolong ringan dan banyak orang sembuh dari penyakit ini tanpa bantuan.
Ketika pertemuan ini dibuka Inggris memperkirakan akan muncul 100.000 kasus H1N1 baru setiap hari pada Oktober mendatang.
300 korban meninggal
Puncak musim flu sekarang terjadi di Amerika Selatan dan banyak negara yang mengumumkan keadaan darurat.
El Salvador melaporkan korban meninggal dunia pertama akibat flu babi hanya sehari setelah Paraguay mengumumkan korban pertama di negara tersebut.
"Seperti kita lihat dewasa ini, 100 negara telah melaporkan penyakit ini. Begitu virus pandemi muncul, penyebarannya secara internasional tidak bisa dihentikan," kata Dr Chan.
Para kepala pemerintahan dan pakar dari 50 negara menghadiri pertemuan di Cancun ini untuk membahas strategi mengatasi virus flu babi.
Penyakit ini menarik perhatian dunia lebih dari dua bulan lalu.
Sejak itu virus H1N1 menyebar di lebih dari 100 negara, menginveksi lebih dari 70.000 orang dan menewaskan lebih dari 300 orang di seluruh dunia.

Bernard Madoff mengaku menyesal atas penipuan
Pengelola dana AS Bernard Madoff dihukum penjara 150 tahun atas dakwaan penipuan yang merugikan investor $65 miliar.
Kasus penipuan investasi terbesar dalam sejarah Amerika ini disidangkan di pengadilan New York.
Hakim menyatakan, hukuman penjara - yang merupakan hukuman terberat yang bisa dijatuhkan - penting bagi korban dan sebagai sarana pencegahan (deterrent) bagi orang lain.
Para korban penipuan Maddof bertepuk tangan ketika vonis dibacakan.
Sebagian dari mereka sebelumnya mengatakan di pengadilan bahwa mereka telah menderita akibat penipuan senilai 65 miliar dollar tersebut.
Sebelum divonis, Madoff mengatakan, dia tidak mungkin memberikan alasan, dan dia akan harus hidup dalam penderitaan yang dia timbulkan sepanjang sisa umurnya.
Meminta maaf
Hakim Distrik Denny Chin menggambarkan kejahatan Madoff "mencengangkan".
Pengacara Madoff berusaha mengupayakan hukuman yang lebih ringan yaitu 12 tahun.
Hakim Chin menghukum Madoff atas 11 dakwaan, termasuk penipuan surat berharga dan pemutihan uang.

Anggota Komisi I DPR Djoko Susilo mengatakan Malaysia sepakat dengan Indonesia untuk memulai kembali perundingan dengan mempergunakan konvensi kelautan PBB.
Konvensi yang dimaksud oleh Djoko Susilo adalah United Nation Convention Law of the Sea 1982 yang sudah diratifikasi oleh Indonesia dan Malaysia.
Kesimpulan ini didapat Djoko Susilo setelah bertemu dengan wakil Menteri Luar Negeri Malaysia hari Rabu (10/06) di Kuala Lumpur.
"Indonesia berada pada posisi yang lebih kuat karena menurut konvensi itu kami mempunyai soveign rights, beda dengan sovereignity, terhadap ambalat," ujar Djoko Susilo kepada Radio BBC Siaran Indonesia.
"Karena Indonesia adalah negara kepulauan berdasarkan konvensi itu, sementara Malaysia tidak. Jadi ketentuan mengenai negara kepulauan berlaku untuk Indonesia dan tidak untuk Malaysia."
Dalam kunjungan itu lima anggota komisi I DPR juga bertemu dengan Angkatan Laut Malaysia di Kuala Lumpur.

Wawancara lengkapDjoko Susilo mengatakan Angkatan Laut Malaysia meminta maaf atas perbuatan personelnya yang tidak menyenangkan bagi Indonesia.
Sementara di Jakarta Menteri Pertahanan Juwono Sudarsono mengusulkan kegiatan patroli bersama oleh kedua negara atas wilayah itu.
Pernyataan Juwono dikemukakan setelah bertemu dengan Panglima Angkatan Tentara Malaysia hari Rabu (10/06).
Pertikaian mengenai kepulauan yang diperkirakan memiliki cadangan gas dan minyak ini berasal dari satu peta yang dibuat oleh Malaysia tahun 1979 yang menempatkan kepulauan itu kedalam wilayahnya.
Indonesia memprotes langkah Malaysia itu.
Tahun 1999 dan 2004 Indonesia memberi konsesi kepada dua perusahaan minyak untuk melakukan eksplorasi di wilayah tersebut.
Sementara tahun 2005 Malaysia menyerahkan kontrak eksplorasi di wilayah yang sama kepada satu perusahaan minyak asing.
