Survivors of the huge waves, relatives of the victims and the Queen all took part in the ceremony, which included a two minute silence.
In the silence thousands of petals, one for each person killed, fell from the ceiling of the cathedral.
Over 273,000 people were killed in the tsunami, which struck south east Asia on 26 December 2004.
Survivor Sasha Pagella, said the service was a "chance to say goodbye" to a little girl he had tried to hold onto but who had been swept away.
The sermon was given by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, and police who helped with the aid effort were also present.
Nearly 2,000 people attended the service.
